Detailed DAS Client Configuration Guides:

In our lab, we needed to support a number of different operating systems on our DAS clients. Every client OS listed was tested against a test matrix to make sure that it would work properly. The client environment consists mainly of GNU/Linux (strong bias towards Red Hat) and FreeBSD hosts. At one time, Slackware was fairly popular, but since they do not support PAM, we cannot use them as DAS clients. As previously mentioned, SuSE's kpasswd command does not seem to work with our MIT Kerberos 5 setup, so we do not use it.

Red Hat, Fedora Core, Mandrake, Debian, and FreeBSD 5.x all worked well.

Although Red Hat 7.3 and Red Hat 8 are not listed, they should work with the Red Hat 9 instructions. I did some preliminary testing with those versions. Red Hat 7.0 - 7.2 may work as well, but I had no reason to test them.

Continued Testing:

It is difficult to keep up with all of the different distributions, releases, and version updates. There are simply too many different operating systems. In the future, I will try to post new configuration guides for mainstream operating systems that I use. This will probably consist of tracking FreeBSD, Debian, and Fedora Core. I may also test Solaris and MacOS X.

If someone would like to run the client test matrix against another OS, like Mandrake or SuSE, and provide the working configs, I will be happy to add them to the document.
